Exploration Day 2020

Fresh Ideas monthly winners and Highly Commended Entrants from across the 2019-20 competition cycle took Dynamic Earth by storm on Saturday for SIE’s annual Exploration Day. From identifying your customers to making your dream connections and capturing attention with the perfect pitch, the up-and-coming entrepreneurs gained insight and inspiration to help them develop all of the key skills necessary to make a new business shine.

Saskia Goeres, founder of SofaForLife opened the day by sharing her personal entrepreneurial journey – from her own start validating her concept with SIE’s support, through the trials of staffing, manufacturing and patent law, right up to her incredible talent for snapping pictures of politicians and celebrities enjoying her sofa.

We were also delighted to welcome back Mel Sherwood, pitching and public speaking expert, who not only energised and inspired the room with her #pitchtastic session, but kindly donated a signed copy of her own book to the prize pool for SIE’s famous 20-second pitching competition.

At the end of a full day, including workshops and presentations from SIE’s own expert business advisors, peer pitching practise, and a short open session to network and prepare, it was time for the lightning pitching competition. Who could get the judges most excited about their business in just 20 seconds? Almost everybody in attendance signed up to give it a try!

Claiming cash prizes and a copy of Mel Sherwood’s Authority Guide to Pitching Your Business, the winners on the day were:

  • Linda Freimane of Edinburgh Napier University
  • Seamus Somerville of Edinburgh Napier University
  • Siri Price of the University of Strathclyde
  • Robin Sherriff of Queen Margaret University
  • Sara Cowan of the University of Strathclyde
The winners of the 20-second pitch competition demonstrate their power poses!

As Fresh Ideas 2019-20 ramps up into the grand finals, all of these lucky entrants have the chance to redraft their business concepts using everything they learned at Exploration Day. From there, a shortlist of finalists will be chosen to progress to Pitching Day in March. The heat is on for this year’s hopefuls, and we can’t wait to see what they bring to the next stage!
