Saturday saw a fantastic turnout for this year’s Exploration Day. Monthly winners and highly commended participants in the Fresh Ideas Competition came together from across Scotland for an intensive day of talks and workshops designed to hone business strategies, develop core concepts, and build world-class pitching skills. At the packed venue attendees got the opportunity to network and collaborate with fellow young entrepreneurs, discuss start-up business development, and hone their enterprise concepts.
Invited speakers for the day included Mel Sherwood, pitching and public speaking expert, and Martina Zupan, 2018 winner of the Fresh Ideas competition and founder of Alterwaste, as well as SIE’s own Senior Business Advisors. They shared insights on a range of subjects, from understanding customers to creating a business model – and of course, delivering the perfect pitch.
Finally it was time to put all of that learning to use – the day ended with a 20-second pitching contest, where participants were challenged to sum up their concepts and excite their audience in just a few sentences. The judging panel of speakers and advisors had just as difficult a time narrowing down a top five, but the final winners of the mini-contest were:
- Yanik Nyberg of Strathclyde University
- Marwa Ebrahim of the University of Glasgow
- Lucy Kerr of Glasgow School of Art
- Bettina Hernberg of the University of Edinburgh
- Justin Arthur Serini of the University of Aberdeen
Everybody who placed as a Monthly Winner or Highly Commended entrant in the first few rounds of the Fresh Ideas Competition will now have the chance to develop and re-submit their entries if they wish, based on what they learned at the Exploration Day. Top entrants will then be shortlisted and invited to pitch directly to a panel of judges on March 9th. Overall winners will then be announced at an awards dinner attended by industry leaders, entrepreneurs and former winners on March 28th.
