Students tackle Ideas for Action at final of I’m an Innovator competition

Some of Scotland’s brightest students met a special two day innovation retreat at Loch Lomond on June 6-7 for the final of the Scottish Institute for Enterprise’s I’m an Innovator Competition.

The competition encouraged students to trust their instincts and ideas for making a difference to Scotland, taking inspiration from Scotland’s history and some of the most exciting young entrepreneurs who have worked with SIE since 2000. The finalists honed their ideas over the two days and made their final pitches to competition judges.

The winners of I’m an Innovator 2018, receiving £500 each, were:

  • Pooja Jain, University of Edinburgh (graduate) – CogniHealth
  • Yanik Nyberg & Julian Engelmann, University of Strathclyde – Scottish Samphire
  • Ruth McLaren, University of Strathclyde – Silver Lion Innovations
  • Lucy Kerr, Glasgow School of Art – Wet Blue
  • Kara Weekes, University of Edinburgh – Palma Soap
  • Alison Wood & Mhairi Cochrane, University of Edinburgh – Lilypads

Richard Gibbs of I’m an Innovator competition sponsor, Marks & Clark, said:

“We’re proud to be supporting SIE and helping to lay the foundations for a new generation of brilliant innovators with this forward-thinking initiative. It’s vital that Scotland’s young entrepreneurs get early exposure to opportunities like this and are able to learn the skills that can make a huge difference to how their ideas develop. For many involved, the I’m an Innovator competition will be the start of a very exciting journey and it’s fantastic to see so many taking up the challenge.”

Fiona Godsman, CEO of the Scottish Institute for Enterprise, continued:

“Through our work with Scotland’s universities and colleges, we help ensure that students can access some of the most cutting-edge concepts in enterprise education and really compete on a global stage. This year’s competition entrants have been an impressive bunch and this special innovation retreat is a fabulous way for the students to really focus on their ideas and develop in an inspiring location. Congratulations to the winners!”
