Make 2018 the Year of YOU

It’s a New Year and the time to make plans and look ahead, whether it’s thinking about your next year of studies or how you’re going to change the world…

Young people are the future and the Scottish Government is recognizing this with 2018 being the official Year of the Young People. Over the course of the year, there will be activities and events focusing on six themes that young people identified as most important for them as young Scots: Participation, Education, Health and Wellbeing, Equality and Discrimination, Enterprise and Regeneration, and Culture. You can keep up with the latest updates of YoYP2018 here.

As an organisation that works with young people every day, SIE is delighted to see the Scottish Government’s recognition of the important role that young people play in our society. Our contribution to YoYP2018 focuses on the impact that enterprise and innovation can make in all of the 6 themes and beyond.

In this Year of the Young People, what have we got coming up in the next few months?

29th of January is the final day to submit an entry into the first stage of the SIE’s Fresh Ideas competition. Fresh Ideas is looking for promising ideas which could turn into potential businesses. The competition is aimed at students and recent graduates from Scottish universities and colleges who have an idea and would like to investigate the possibility of turning it into a business or social enterprise. The best ideas will move forward to the second stage and February’s Exploration Day workshop before final pitching for the top prizes of £1000.

If you have an idea, you can get free advice at any time from our team of advisors who have a broad range of experience and contacts to assist you turning your idea into reality.

But our Fresh Ideas competition isn’t the only opportunity for you to start changing the world with the support of SIE! You don’t have to have a business idea to take part in our exciting new Scottish Innovative Student Award programme (SISA).

The Silver Award stage of SISA provides students with a unique opportunity to design the future, to work on real life challenges and to make Scotland a better place. To apply for the Silver stage, you must complete a short online application form, in order to be invited to participate in an exciting one day workshop on the 24th of February. The deadline for applications is the 9th of February and places are filling up so don’t wait until the last minute.  Following participation in the Silver stage workshop, you will have the chance to apply for a Gold Award and the chance to be named one of the Scottish Innovative Students of the Year 2018.

Finally, returning in February is the I’m an Innovator competition. I’m an Innovator focuses on ideas which will make a positive impact to Scotland and gives you the opportunity to change the world. With ‘I’m an Innovator’ SIE is looking for innovative ideas for businesses, social enterprises, products or services which could make a difference to how people live in Scotland. The best ideas will win cash prizes from a total £3000 prize fund!
