Get Motivated to Get Motivated- By Laura Salmond

Get Motivated to Get Motivated!

At the moment I’m trying to get fit; the combination of being a late night snacker, with the lack of exercise has taken its toll, and having spent the last 2 years of my life dodging the camera lens I’ve finally had enough. I’m in need of motivation and require lots of it!

So what is motivation?

It’s the driving force that enables you to achieve your goals and allows you to go after what you want in life, such as starting your own business or securing that dream job. With hard work, motivation can help you achieve anything you want, but sometimes people don’t want to put the effort in; they want a short-cut to success and this can often lead to failure. Always on the lookout for the newest diet fad, dietary supplement or quick fix I know this first-hand; and in my experience the end result usually involves me falling off the wagon.

Resigned to the fact that it will take effort to get me to where I want to be, I now take personal satisfaction in knowing that if along the way I have to overcome a few obstacles to achieve my goal, my success will taste much sweeter.

So how do we develop motivation in life? This isn’t an easy question to answer as what motivates someone can differ depending on the individual, but after having thought about this deeply, here are a four easy tips that may help:-

Focus Small.

Sometimes concentrating on completing small achievable targets can encourage motivation.  When I achieve a small victory such as refusing that glass of ‘Vino Tinto’ with my meal this helps me build confidence and spurs me on. Try and focus on the little triumphs rather than conquering the proverbial ‘beast.’

Visualise it.

Write down your goal on a piece of paper, or keep a picture of something that inspires you. I’ve found that having a visual representation of the thing I want to achieve helps me to focus. Placing this visualisation where you will be reminded of it can also help. (Personally, it was a case of putting an unpleasant photo of me on the door of the refrigerator.) Find what works for you and try it.

Block out negative influences.

If you feel that you are being distracted from your goal by a problem that doesn’t seem to go away, ask yourself what you can do to change this.  In the past, my own negative thoughts and lack of faith in myself have stopped me achieving my goals.  Now that I am trying to think more positively, I feel more motivated.

Work at it!

You won’t reach your goal unless you regularly think about it and striving to work towards it.

Finally, motivation is the fuel that is required to help make you successful; try and soak up motivating things and find out what motivates you, whether this is success, a sense of achievement, or treating yourself.  Remember we’re only human, it is natural to have our ‘off’ days but don’t let them put you off; if you continue to surround yourself with positive and motivational things, these will be few and far between. So let’s get motivated to get motivated!
