Scott McKellar, SIE’s Marketing Communicating Manager, looks at this year’s Global Entrepreneurship Week, which was held Nov 18 – 22.
Global Entrepreneurship Week is the world’s largest campaign to promote entrepreneurship and encourage the next generation of entrepreneurs. This year saw one of Scotland’s most successful Global Entrepreneurship Weeks and SIE was right in the thick of it with our friends in the entrepreneurial ecosystem.
Scotland’s official launch event was co-ordinated by Geoff Leask from Young Enterprise Scotland. Representatives from the Scottish Institute for Enterprise, Business Gateway, Saltire Foundation, The Prince’s Trust, Entrepreneurial Spark, Scottish Enterprise, Highlands & Islands Enterprise, Women’s Enterprise Scotland, the Scottish Government and many more organisations assembled at Shawlands Academy to officially launch Global Entrepreneurship Week on Monday 18th November.

With 297 events happening all over Scotland, some of SIE’s student interns worked as official Global Entrepreneurship Week journalists blogging about local events for GEW13.
We were also involved with several events officially recognised as High Impact.
SIE were one of the sponsors of the Startup Summit 13 which was held in Edinburgh on Nov 20th. As well as the sponsorship, an official team of SIE interns were provided to help behind the scenes. It was a fantastic event and a great showcase of Scotland’s enterprising spirit.
SIE Tech Entrepreneurs 2013 was organised by SIE informatics Intern, Tadas Labudis, Strathclyde University’s Geeksoc society and Glasgow Caledonian University’s Computing Society and featured stories from four local technology entrepreneurs. You can follow how things went on the official storyfy link which collects together all the tweets and photos from the evening here [http://storify.com/Eventhread/sie-tech-entrepeneurs-2013?utm_medium=sfy.co-twitter&utm_content=storify-pingback&awesm=sfy.co_gWa1&utm_campaign&utm_source=facebook.com]
During GEW13 we also launched our new I’m an Entrepreneur case studies and posters which are now available to all Scotland’s universities and colleges. The campaign showcases four entrepreneurs who have started up with help from SIE and others in the entrepreneurial ecosystem and includes video content from each of the entrepreneurs. You can read more about it at: www.sie.ac.uk/entrepreneurs.
There were approx 3,000 events in the UK, organised by over 600 partners, and over 8,000 mentions in social media of the official hashtag #GEWfwd.
Scotland’s contribution this year was notable and the co-ordinated approach demonstrated just how the enterprise support organisations in Scotland work closely together. Certainly a case of “Celebrating Enterprise Together”, and we’re already looking forward to Global Entrepreneurship Week 2014.
